For more than a century, rowing has been at the heart of life at Oriel. Every Oriel rower remembers the intensity of the Bump Races, the early mornings on the Isis, and the friendships forged through shared commitment. Whether in the traditional ‘rugby’ eight, a crew that won its oar, or alongside lifelong friends, you’ll look back on the challenges and excitement as one of the defining experiences of your time at Oriel.
Inspired by Oriel’s 700th Anniversary, alumni are now launching an Endowment Appeal to ensure that future students can experience the same opportunities that shaped your time at Oriel.
Raise £1 million for the Boat Club Endowment.
This endowment will:
Oriel College provides core support to the Boat Club — covering boathouse rent, maintenance, the Boatman's salary, and insurance. However, boats, equipment, and coaching depend on annual appeals and sponsorship, limiting long-term planning and the stability the Club needs to develop future crews. A dedicated Endowment Fund will change this.
Oriel has committed to continue its existing support of the Oriel Boat Club, ensuring that all funds raised for the Endowment Appeal will strengthen the Boat Club’s long-term future.
To celebrate Oriel College’s rowing heritage and 700th anniversary in 2026, more than 50 alumni, students and staff will be rowing across the Channel during April and May. They will be crossing the 35 miles from Ramsgate to Dunkirk in Cornish Gigs – fixed seat boats similar to those used for the first Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in 1829.
